Helping Judah be at ease with numbers is really important to me, mostly because I really, really dislike math. Like, I used to break out in a sweat before exams in school. I took the minimum requirements to get my degree in college and cried through every course. I use my phone calculator in the grocery store and if I know someone is watching me, I panic and can't remember how to add a 20% tip. Horrible, right?
Judah and I like to do simple counting together and I wanted to share these easy (cheap, too!) activities. Don't ask me what my plan is for when he graduates from long division, though ;)
ANIMAL CRACKER MATH
Judah loved this one, because it combines two of his favorite things in the world: snack and animals! We basically started with a bowl of animal crackers and a piece of paper with empty circles. This exercise was inspired by this post from God's Little Explorers, but I took a few liberties . . . mainly because I didn't want to wash a bunch of dirty dishes after we were done, haha!
Judah sorted his crackers, but obviously there were lots of extras, so I just said he could eat the them! After he was done being patient with the sorting, he counted the animals in each circle and we wrote the total in the center. And then . . . you guessed it; he ate them!
This activity only took a few minutes, but it was a fun way to practice counting and sorting different objects. Also, we snuck in a lot of animal noises, because that's fun too.
EGG CARTON COUNTING
This is so simple- just an empty egg carton, labelled (I removed the lid). We used Cheerios to count and fill each well. I guess we have a food theme here?
NUMBER MATCH PUZZLES
This puzzle was $3 in the Target Dollar Spot. We make a big thing of shaking up the pieces in the box before pouring them on the floor to match. After the counting and matching is done, Judah puts them all in order.
